Sony Music Licensing has unveiled a business-to-business Web site, which is designed to simplify the process of finding and using music. SonyMusicfinder.com, launched yesterday (April 27), includes all of Sony Music's catalog in every genre.
Sony Music Licensing senior VP Paula Erickson says the site gives registered users quick, accurate and convenient access to master recordings.
Film, television and advertising professionals are the primary target users, Erickson says, but video game producers and anyone else seeking licensed music are welcome.
Every song on the site can be listened to all the way through instead of just the standard 30-second clip. "We discussed that for many weeks internally, and we thought the best way to service our clients was to let them stream the whole song," she says. "Especially in film and television, we couldn't possibly determine what portion of a song would appeal to the creators."
The site won't replace the human touch, however. Erickson says the online catalog will be useful during phone conversations, where clients interested in a suggestion can be directed "within three clicks to every version of that song that exists in our catalog."
In the future, Erickson intends to provide access to international catalogs as well. Each Sony Music affiliate will put up its own Web pages highlighting local recordings, supported by the central search engine.
Another future addition will enable clients to complete a full licensing transaction online. "We want to keep that personal relationship, but we are trying to streamline the licensing process," Erickson says.
