Feat is first for game-console biz.

Combined global shipments of Sony Computer Entertainment's "PlayStation" and "PS one" video-game consoles have topped 100 million units, a first for the computer game console industry, the company said today (May 19).

Shipments in North America have reached 39 million, as have European shipment totals. Japanese figures exceed 20 million units.

Sony Computer launched its PlayStation in 1994, and the compact model of the same machine, PS one, debuted in 2000. The game consoles are sold in 120 countries and regions.

The shipment figures don't include Sony's later PlayStation 2 model.
