As expected, Napster today (May 26) launched a regionally branded version of its digital-music service for Canada.
The Canadian edition of Napster 2.0, accessible at www.napster.ca, is the first on-demand subscription service available to Canadian music consumers. The store also offers á la carte music and Canadian-specific radio stations
Napster Canada launches with more than 300,000 tracks from all five majors and dozens of independent labels, including content from domestic acts. The service costs $9.95 Canadian ($7.26) per month for the subscription or $1.19 Canadian (87 cents) for individual tracks. All Canadian customers can access a free seven-day trial.
The company has also unveiled a strategic branding deal with beverage company Molson. The multi-year pact includes free access to Napster Canada for members of the Molson Insiders program.
Roxio has opened an office in Richmond Hill, Ontario, that will serve as the Canadian headquarters for the Napster service. Napster's U.S.-based personnel will initially be responsible for the service's operations in Canada.
