Online musicians' community GarageBand.com will offer the Creative Commons Music Sharing License as an option for songs uploaded to its Web site.

The license, provided by the nonprofit group Creative Commons, allows fans to legally download, copy and share music files, provided they do not alter or make commercial use of them. The license will be displayed as a tag on each participating GarageBand.com song page.

GarageBand.com recently supplemented its existing membership by resurrecting the MP3.com archives. GarageBand.com now claims that more than 300,000 independent artists can implement the Creative Commons copyright license on 1.8 million songs.

The Creative Commons license exists in three formats: a plain-language summary known as "human-readable," a thorough license known as "lawyer-readable" and the metadata "machine-readable" version.
