The Melbourne International Jazz Festival has appointed Carlo Pagnotta as international artistic director for its next event, in May 2005.

Pagnotta is director of the long-running Umbria Jazz festival in Perugia, Italy.

"[Pagnotta] is one of the most important names in jazz," comments MIJF chairman Albert Dadon on the appointment. "The fact that he has agreed to take on the role immediately elevates (MIJF) to a new plane," Dadon adds.

MIJF organizers are hoping that Pagnotta's close relationship with major jazz performers will help attract them Down Under.

Adrian Jackson, who was artistic director of the festival since its inception in 1998, resigned last month to devote more time to overseeing the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz, which takes place in October.
