Veteran British modern rock band the Cure will be the subject of an "MTV Icon" special, set to tape September 17 from London's Old Billingsgate Market.

The band members will perform at the show, and other yet-to-be announced artists will pay homage to the group's 25-year recording career. MTV Networks Europe says the live tribute event will premiere across its network from October 2004.

Microsoft's MSN Messenger is sponsor and will offer MTV viewers the chance to win prizes, which include a trip for two to the event. The networks' 11 regional Website will feature microsites decided to the special.

The Cure's most recent self-titled I AM/Geffen set opened at No. 1 on European Top 100 Albums in July, and has gone on to ship 500,000 copies ex-U.S., says a spokesman. Since forming in 1979, the band has shifted more than 27 million albums worldwide, according to their label.
