There are new champions on the European sales charts, as Bjork's "Medulla" (One Little Indian) debuts at No. 1 on Top 100 Albums and Aventura's "Obsession" (Up Music) rises 2-1 on Eurochart Hot 100 Singles.
Bjork's album repeats the achievement of her last studio set, "Vespertine," which went straight to the summit in September 2001. "Medulla" this week debuts at No. 1 in France, No. 2 in Italy, No. 3 in Norway and Switzerland, No. 5 in Germany and Portugal, No. 6 in Spain and No. 9 in the United Kingdom. It also climbs 13-1 in Belgium.
The Libertines' self-titled Rough Trade album opens at No. 5 overall, fuelled by a No. 1 start in the United Kingdom on sales of 72,000 units. The single "Can't Stand Me Now" hit No. 2 in last month in Britain. The group's 2002 debut, "Up the Bracket," reached a U.K. peak of only No. 35.
Ray Charles makes a spectacular posthumous debut at No. 7 on Top 100 Albums with the duets collection "Genius Loves Company" (EMI). Its best showing is at No. 3 in Italy; it also bows at No. 8 in Portugal and No. 18 in the United Kingdom, where it's Charles' first album chart appearance with anything but a hits collection since 1963.
"Confidence" (Sony Music), the third album by German reggae artist Gentleman, arrives at No. 8 overall, thanks to entries at No. 1 in Germany and No. 4 in Austria. It includes the current German single "Superior" and collaborations with Barrington Levy, Jack Radics, Daddy Rings and other reggae stars. The latter two artists will guest with Gentleman on a fall tour of Germany/Switzerland/Austria that begins Oct. 8 in Hamburg.
"Es Wird Morgen" (BMG) by 2raumwohnung, the German duo of Inga Humpe and Tommi Eckart, enters at No. 2 in their own country, for a No. 11 aggregate debut. It's the act's third studio album.
While Aventura's "We Broke the Rules" falls 11-12 on Top 100 Albums, the Dominican group's single "Obsession" reaches the Eurochart summit this week. It climbs of 3-1 in Germany and 22-3 in Austria, while spending a fourth week at No. 1 in France.
The Eurochart's highest arrival, at No. 5, is Nelly's "My Place"/"Flap Your Wings" (Universal). It's new at No. 1 in the United Kingdom, where it sells 54,000 units, and at No. 2 in Ireland. In some markets, "My Place" is listed as the sole A-side, such as Holland, where it's up 5-3, and Portugal, where it improves 8-5.
The other top-10 Eurochart debut is Twista's "Sunshine" (Atlantic), at No. 7. It opens at No. 3 in the United Kingdom, following its No. 2 U.S. peak on the Billboard Hot 100.
