Sony BMG Music Entertainment continues to make upper-level appointments. The company today (Sept. 27) announced key executives in its digital music and legal divisions, all based in New York.

Thomas Hesse has been tapped to oversee digital music and new-technology efforts, with the title of president of the newly created Global Digital Business (GDB) group. Hesse, who was BMG's chief strategic officer, reports to Sony BMG CEO Michael Smellie.

Prior to joining BMG in 2002, Hesse was executive VP/head of corporate strategy at BMG parent Bertelsmann AG in Guetersloh, Germany.

Sony technology vets Thomas Gewecke and Matt Carpenter will serve as Hesse's top lieutenants and direct reports.

Gewecke -- previously senior VP of business development at Sony Music Digital Services -- is named senior VP of Digital Business Group, a division of GDB. He will oversee all digital marketing, licensing and distribution around the world, and will also continue to be responsible for Sony's mobile music business.

Carpenter -- formerly senior VP of development and technology for Sony Music Digital Services -- is named senior VP of GDB unit Global Digital Operations. He will oversee content encoding and digitization; as part of that effort, he will be in charge of Sony BMG's digital asset management system for music, ringtones, videos and artwork.

Additionally, Lisa Weiss has been named senior VP/general counsel/secretary of Sony BMG Music Entertainment, reporting to CEO Andrew Lack.

Weiss will be responsible for overall legal policy, and will oversee all aspects of the Sony BMG law department's operations.

Most recently, Weiss served as senior VP/general counsel/secretary for Sony Music Entertainment, a role she held since 2001. Prior to joining Sony in 2000 she was a partner in the New York-based law firm of Rosenman & Colin LLP.
