British authors rights group MCPS-PRS Alliance has promoted COO Steve Porter to managing director. His elevation to the newly created position is intended to ensure continuity and stability at the collecting society ahead of the retirement of CEO John Hutchinson next year.
Hutchinson will focus on maintaining relations with senior members, licensees, international societies and industry partners.
"I have been increasingly stepping back from the operations, and Steve has been expanding his remit to take account of this," Hutchinson says in a statement.
Porter joined the Alliance in February 1999 as finance director. He added operational duties in a 2000 restructuring of the collecting society's management board, before being appointed COO in January 2004.
In 2003, the Performing Right Society (PRS) registered year-on-year revenue growth of 6% to £283.2 million ($519.9 million), an all-time high. Sister collecting body Mechanical-Copyright Protection Society recorded a 2% increase in distributions to £227 million ($416 million).
