Lifestyle channels replace MTV, MTV2 in Canada.
Canadian broadcaster CHUM Television in Toronto has re-branded its youth lifestyle and pop music video channels as Razer and PunchMuch. Starting June 30, Canadian cable subscribers will receive Razer and PunchMuch in the channel positions formerly occupied by MTV and MTV2.
The decision comes on the heels of the recent joint venture and licensing agreement termination between MTV International and Craig Media, which was purchased by CHUM Ltd. last year.
Razer will launch as a youth lifestyle channel aimed at the 12-24 demographic, and feature music, television, movies, anime, gaming, gear, sports and leisure programming.
PunchMuch is being pitched as Canada's first fully automated, all-request music video service. Fans will be able to request videos and participate in on-screen chats via wireless phones.
"We've got an outstanding track record for staying connected to our viewers and responding with what they want," says David Kines, VP of music and youth specialty channels for CHUM Television. “Razer and PunchMuch are all about an energized community, and the digital landscape is a great new place to make that happen."
