Market expected to top $50 million in 2005.
Universal Music & Video Distribution signed an exclusive distribution agreement with Sybersound Records, a producer of home-market karaoke software.
The agreement, which takes effect immediately, covers all of Sybersound's products, including the popular Party Tyme Karaoke and Billboard Top 10 Karaoke lines.
"Sybersound offers the highest-quality products and is among one of the most innovative companies in this fast-growing sector of the business," said Jim Urie, president of UMVD in a statement.
Propelled in part by the success of such television programs as American Idol and Nashville Star, the home karaoke business has grown steadily in recent years. The National Association of Music Merchants estimates retail sales alone at over $38 million for 2004 and is expected to top $50 million in 2005.
Karaoke machines and karaoke CD+Gs, which include sounds tracks, lyrics and graphics, are now carried by major retailers nationally.
