Will deliver recordings immediately after shows.
Instant Live, the live concert CD arm of Clear Channel Entertainment, has cut a deal with Universal Music Group (UMG) to deliver live CDs and digital downloads of UMG acts immediately following shows.
The deal is the first between a major label and a concert CD firm and will be administered under eLabs, UMG’s new media and technologies division.
"It took many months to do this deal because it is very complex in some ways, though simple overall," Stephen Prendergast, GM of Instant Live, tells Billboard.biz. "Now we have the stamp of approval from the world's largest record company and that means a lot to us."
Prendergast says UMG sees Instant Live as both a revenue producer and a marketing opportunity for artists. UMG labels include Decca Music Group, DreamWorks, Interscope, A&M Records, Geffen Records, Island Def Jam, Lost Highway, MCA, Mercury, Motown and many others.
"This deal is basically a framework that UMG corporate has approved so that each of the individual labels have a guideline they can go to that's simple and laid out for them," says Prendergast. "The key questions are covered so each label head can decide what terms best suit their client."
Instant Live plays a “service provider” role, Prendergast adds. “UMG will own the works, though we will have rights to them for a period of time,” he says. “We’re here to develop new artists so we have those headliners for the future.”
Prendergast adds that Instant Live will move increasingly toward digital delivery in the coming months, but CDs will remain a core product.
