Thirteen Finnish bands will perform during the opening night of the 40th Midem trade conference at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes on Jan. 22. Finland, which is recognized as Europe's fastest growing exporter of musical talent, is co-hosting the opening night.
An eclectic line-up of acts will feature at the "Come hear. Finland" evening, including dark rock act 69 Eyes, contemporary jazz band Five Corners Quintet and hip hop artist Redrama.
Sponsor Nokia, the Finnish wireless communications company, will also take part in Finland's Midem push, where it plans to launch its new line of music phones.
Music Export Finland unveiled the participants during the annual Finnish get-together Musiikki & Media held in Tampere, Finland from Oct. 21-23.
An independent working group selected the bands on the basis that they represent a broad variety of genres.
"Finland's music export success is exemplary, as they know how to value a huge artistic talent pool and deliver this to the international market; and they're always on the look out for new opportunities and developments," comments Midem director Dominique Leguern.
The "Come hear. Finland" event is co-organized by Midem and Music Export Finland and supported by Finnish ministries of trade and industry, dducation/culture and foreign affairs, in addition to the Finnish cultural foundation.
