VeriSign, the parent company of ringtone retailer Jamster, is developing a full-song mobile music download service in conjunction with Melodeo.
Melodeo currently powers the mobile music stores of several wireless carriers worldwide, including Rogers Wireless in Canada and Telefónica Móviles España in Spain. Melodeo will provide the digital rights management system for the Jamster store.
Jamster sells mobile content via what's called an "off-portal" system, meaning users can buy directly from Jamster and not directly from their wireless carrier.
Details of the Jamster service remain vague, but Mahi de Silva, senior VP of VeriSign Communications Services alluded to a potential mobile subscription service.
No timeline was given for how soon the service would be available, or in what regions.
