Realtones coming to Mexico's top cell phone provider
Sony BMG Mexico has struck a deal to deliver realtones via Mexico's leading cell phone service provider Telcel. As of the first week of June, hundreds of Sony BMG tracks, including hits by Shakira, Pink, Kelly Clarkson, La Orjea de Van Gogh and Vicente Fernandez, will be available for Telcel subscribers.
According to Sony BMG, Telcel boasts some 35 million subscribers, of which roughly half have the capability to download realtones. Prior to the Telcel deal, Sony BMG also had a deal in place with USACel, a smaller provider.
Other labels, notably Universal and Warner, also offer realtones in Mexico. For Sony BMG, Mexico is the second Latin American market in which it has made real tones available, with Brazil being the first. Because high speed Internet access is still limited in most of Latin America, the sales possibilities of real tones are considered to be far greater than what the region has shown thus far for digital downloads.
Plans call for realtones to be made available in other Latin American countries in the coming months, as well as the addition of full track downloads.
