Attendance is up at the 81st International Assn. of Assembly Managers (IAAM) annual conference and trade show, with about 2,600 on hand for the industry confab held here Aug. 4-9.

The trade show features 1,400 exhibitors catering to the venue industry, and more than 56 sponsors are on board, according to IAAM executive director Dexter King, who adds that this is the "smoothest" conference of his five years at the helm of the association.

King says the general mood of those in attendance indicates a "sense of optimism that comes out of coming off strong seasons." As for the association, King says IAAM is in its "best shape ever" financially.

In other news from the conference, Philadelphia-based facility management firm SMG says it will work with Rolling Stones producer Michael Cohl in staging a Sept. 30 concert by the Stones at legendary Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., home of the Kentucky Derby. The stage for the concert will be set up in the track's fourth turn; this will be the venue's first-ever major concert.
