He replaces Paul Jessop.
Richard Gooch, deputy director of technology at the international music industry's trade body IFPI, has been promoted to director of technology, effective Oct. 1.
He replaces Paul Jessop, who has been seconded to IFPI's U.S. affiliate the RIAA, and he reports directly to IFPI chairman/CEO John Kennedy.
The qualified chartered engineer with a doctorate in engineering mathematics has played a pivotal role in IFPI's digital-music strategy for its members, the major labels.
His job has included the organization's drive to educate consumers and service providers about the damage caused to the music industry when technology is used to infringe copyright.
Gooch was also involved in IFPI's litigations against serial digital pirates. Moreover, he was instrumental in explaining IFPI's stance in the development of digital-rights-management systems and issues about the interoperability of the different digital-music formats.
