HMV Japan launched the Japanese edition of its HMV Digital music-download service Oct. 26 with an initial 1 million songs, priced at an average ¥150 ($1.26) each.

The service was introduced in cooperation with Label Gate, an online music distribution service owned by several major Japanese labels. HMV Digital uses the Windows Audio Media format.

HMV Digital is accessible through the retailer's hmv.co.jp website, which HMV Japan says averages 48 million hits daily. HMV Digital will offer video downloads within a few months of the service's launch.
