Record labels in China have filed suit against the operator of Yahoo China for providing access to free music.

According to Shanghai China Daily, 11 labels -- including Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group --filed the joint suit against the Beijing-based Alibaba, which runs Yahoo's Chinese site. They say that Yahoo China is providing lyrics, ringtones and allows users to listen and download 229 Chinese and English songs, since April 10, 2006.

The labels are asking for total damages of US $687,500.
