Oscar winner and independent film stalwart Robert Redford will headline Mobile Backstage, a special one-day mobile entertainment conference produced by the GSM Association and The Nielsen Company, owner of Billboard and The Hollywood Reporter.

Redford will participate in a keynote interview at the event, which will be held Feb. 13 at Barcelona's National Palace in Montjuic, above the Mobile World Congress complex. Redford will focus on the potential for independent filmmakers to use mobile devices to reach a global audience.

"The energy and opportunity that this event presents, not just for business but for artists and their work, makes it particularly exciting for me," Redford says. "The GSMA continues to take seriously both the business of delivering content and the art of creating content, as they lead the exciting mobile sector into the future."

Redford is founder and president of the Sundance Institute, which has previously teamed with the GSMA on film initiative. For instance, in 2007, the Sundance Film Festival sponsored a short film project with the GSMA, and in conjunction with this year's Congress, the Sundance Channel will showcase works by Isabella Rossellini which debuted at the recent Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.

"We are thrilled and honored to announce this rare keynote appearance by a screen legend," says Bill Gajda, chief marketing officer of the GSMA. "As a champion of independent artists and their work, and as an advocate of innovation and risk-taking in the film world, we can expect some forthright, refreshing and somewhat unexpected insights for the mobile world, especially in terms of opportunities for cinematic quality film on the small screen."

Besides the keynote interview, Redford also will appear at the GSMA Global Mobile Awards the evening of Tuesday, February 12th, where he will introduce the GSMA's Mobile Entertainment category. Attendees are encouraged to register early for both the keynote and the awards ceremony, due to space limitation.

The GSMA's Mobile World Congress attracts more than 50,000 mobile trade professionals annually. The 2008 convention will be held at the Fira de Barcelona between Feb. 11-14. More information is available at mobileworldcongress.com.
