Kelly Rowland has been appointed as the 2008 ambassador for the MTV Staying Alive Foundation.

The solo artist and former Destiny's Child singer will be the public face of "Staying Alive" in June 2008. The campaign will raise the profile of the global charitable foundation, which aims to empower young people in protecting themselves and their communities against HIV and AIDS.

Rowland will step into her new role during her solo tour of Africa (June 20-29), which includes dates in South Africa, Ghana, Tanzania, Mozambique, Kenya and Angola. Her trip will include visits to projects supported and funded by the foundation.

"Outstanding role models such as Kelly are a huge help in raising awareness about HIV and AIDS," comments Bill Roedy, vice chairman, MTV Networks, in a statement. "In turn I am sure that Kelly will be truly inspired when she visits the amazing youth led initiatives that the Foundation supports. We are excited that Kelly has agreed to lend not only her name but also her unique blend of creative energy, musical talent and relentless passion to helping us fight a disease that is a defining issue of our time."

The MTV Staying Alive Foundation is a global public charity that was launched in 2004.

Rowland releases "Ms Kelly Deluxe", an updated version of her current album, on May 12.
