The Shockwaves NME Awards are moving to Brixton Academy for the ceremony on Feb. 25, 2009. The South London venue has staged the awards once before in its 55-year history, as well as hosting several of its awards tours and shows.

Brixton Academy has also won best venue at the NME Awards 12 times since 1994. Last year the ceremony was held at O2 Indigo.

"With a capacity of almost 5,000, incredible capabilities for production and a magnificent art deco interior, Brixton Academy is one of a kind, combining the feeling of an electrifying arena size atmosphere with great views and a unique, intimate vibe," said John Northcote, CEO of the venue owners Academy Music Group in a statement.

The following evening, Feb. 26, NME returns to the O2 Arena for the second annual Shockwaves NME Awards Big Gig. Introduced in 2007, the event was attended by 15,000 fans and featured The Cribs, Klaxons, Bloc Party, Kaiser Chiefs and Manic Street Preachers. The 2009 line-up is yet to be announced.
