RealNetworks reported first-quarter earnings that showed an increase in music revenues to $44.1 million, 16% more than the same period last year. That's more revenue than any other business unit in the company.

Helping drive this growth is an increase in subscribers, to 800,000. That's 25,000 more than the prior quarter and 200,000 more than last year's first quarter. The company attributes much of its success to traction gained overseas. Spanish wireless operator Vodafone, for instance, has added a music service powered by RealNetworks to its monthly data plan.

Overall, RealNetworks reported a net loss of $12.1 million, on revenues of $140.8 million.
