This year’s ceremony honoring finalists and winners of Argentina’s music industry awards, the Gardel Awards or Premios Gardel, has been suspended due to the nation’s swine flu health emergency.

The announcement was made today (July 15), by Argentina’s chamber of Record and Video Producers (CAPIF). The 2009 Premios Gardel ceremony was slated to take place July 27 at Teatro Avenida in Buenos Aires. Now, the winners will be announced in a press release on July 22.

“This cancellation doesn’t interfere with the purpose and mission of CAPIF, which is to honor the stars of Argentine music and to continue to support the development of artists and labels,” said Javier Delupi, CAPIF’s executive director.

Delupi says all winners in the Gardel’s 42 categories will be contacted personally. The Gardel Awards are the latest casualty of the swine flu, which has also forced artists like Babásonicos to cancel shows in Argentina.
