Argentine rock icon Luis Alberto Spinetta was awarded the Gardel de Oro (Gold Gardel), the most prestigious award doled out at Argentina’s annual music industry awards, the Premios Gardel. Spinetta, also won in the best rock artist category for his album “Una mañana” and song of the year for the track of the same name. “La Mañana” also won a Gardel for Best album cover design and Best video.

Winners to this year’s annual Premios Gardel were quietly announced with a press release July 22 following the cancellation of this year’s ceremony due to the swine flu health emergency.

Awards, voted upon by an academy of music industry professionals and journalists, were given in over 40 categories. Other winners included Silvina Garré, whose “Canciones Sin Teimpo” won best pop female album; Pedro Aznar, who won best pop male album for “Quebrado,” and Fito Paez, who won in the singer/songwriter category with his song “No Sé si es Baires o Madrid.”
