Somalian-born, Canadian-based hip-hop artist K'Naan has spoken about the "unity and celebration" that will connect with his song "Wavin' Flag," after it was chosen as the official anthem of Coca-Cola's 2010 FIFA World Cup program.

K'Naan has specially recorded a version of the song for the tournament, hosted by South Africa. The remix of "Wavin' Flag" is part of Coca-Cola's global integrated marketing campaign "inspired by the joyous dance celebrations familiar to Africa."

K'Naan's "Wavin' Flag" will be used as the music element throughout the entire campaign including as the soundtrack on all global TV commercials for the soccer tournament. It will also be played at events for the FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour by Coca-Cola, and featured on the online digital platform for the World Cup.

"Wavin Flag: The Celebration Mix" is a recast version of a track off K'Naan's set "Troubadour" (Universal Music, 2009). It features many elements of the original song but includes a pre-chorus that sets the uplifting, unified tone of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, turning the song into one that is "more open, more inviting, more celebratory", the artist says.

"I'm so proud of this version," K'Naan tells Billboard.Biz. "We took something like 50 drums and did this crazy mix for it. It's about the one time that we all get together and the world forgets its conflict and its problems and we focus on this unity and celebration. That moment is connected now to 'Wavin' Flag.'"

K'Naan will be performing the song live during the African element of the FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour by Coca-Cola, which will take the Trophy to 86 countries, including every nation in Africa.

Although there's no confirmed release of the song yet it's likely K'Naan's new version of "Wavin' Flag" will be released in different formats and may feature on various recordings over the months leading up to the 2010 FIFA World Cup next summer.
