"Rock Band" developers Harmonix took a step closer to making the "Rock Band" Network Store a reality by issuing a patch for the PlayStation3 version of the game designed to support the additional music download store.

The "Rock Band" Network, if you remember, is the MTV gaming subsidiary's plan to give any artist the ability to include their music as downloadable content for the "Rock Band" games.

Rather than taking the time to work out a licensing and development deal with Harmonix to bring their music to the platform, artists can simply work with freelance developers trained in the company's development toolset to do the work on their own.

The program has been in beta testing since last year, initially only for the Xbox 360 platform. An update today for those with the PS3 version of the game sets the stage to extend that feature to new users.
