Lady Gaga was the main winner of the ECHO German music awards, held in front of an audience of 4,000 in Berlin.

Lady Gaga - who did not attend - got the awards in the categories female artist rock/pop international, best newcomer of the year international and hit of the year national/international for "Poker Face" (Interscope/Universal).

The March 4 show was broadcast live on the ARD TV-channel and had 3.42 million viewers, up on the 3 million last year.

Singer Marius Müller-Westernhagen, actor Jan Josef Liefers, Ich+Ich singer Adel Tawil, comedian Oliver Pocher, singer Nena and Berlin's mayor Klaus Wowereit presented the awards to ECHO winners. International stars such as Robbie Williams, Rihanna, Sade, Ke$ha and Gossip performed on the night.

Peter Maffay, who received the lifetime achievement award, got a standing ovation from the audience after his performance.

With a performance featuring more than 100 dancing children from Berlin, the Phono Academy honored the late Michael Jackson and admitted him into the newly founded ECHO Hall Of Fame.

The CEO of the German Phono-Academy, the cultural institution of the German music industry, Dieter Gorny said it was a "glamorous evening" that proved its worth in comparison with international awards shows.

Universal Music won 11 of the ECHOs, Sony got four, Warner and EMI had three. The only independent in the ECHO-categories is Tonpool Medien with Xavier Naidoo.

"I am very happy that, with 11 ECHO awards, our artists and producer teams have again made Universal the number one of the company results," said Frank Briegmann, president and CEO Universal Music Germany.
