The rumored keyboard controller for "Rock Band 3" is real. USA Today got the scoop, confirming the 25-key instrument will focus on the same five colored keys that correspond with on-screen prompts just like other instruments.

Those other 20 keys? Well the device also functions as a MIDI keyboard that users can plug into a computer and play like a real instrument. In fact, Rock Band 3 adds a “Pro” mode designed to migrate gamers from simulating playing the various instruments to leaning the real thing. Rock Band 3 will sell two new advanced guitar controllers—including a full-sized, fully functional Fender—and a three-cymbal drum upgrade in addition to the keyboard all designed with music instruction in mind.

The new additions open the door to some interesting possibilities. The most obvious with the keyboard is the addition of new types of songs, as well as the ability to attract new types of gamers who may have not been as interested in drums, guitar or singing. Developer Harmonix points to the ability to add keyboard heavy tracks from artists like The Doors and Queen.

As for the instructional mode, it will be interesting to see if that has any real affect on anything but a handful of users. The whole appeal of games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero was that they let music fans pretend to be rock gods without putting in the effort to actually do so. Sure a few will use the game as a gateway to the real thing. But how widespread remains to be seen.
