The10th annual BMI Urban Awards took place at the Pantages Theatre in Los Angles on September 10 and saluted the songwriters, producers and music publishers of the most-performed R&B, rap and hip-hop songs of the year. BMI President & CEO Del Bryant and Catherine Brewton, Vice President, Writer/Publisher Relations, Atlanta, hosted the ceremony along with Ray J. Big winners of the evening included Lil Wayne, who took home his second consecutive Urban Songwriter of the Year award for writing six of the past year’s most-performed songs in BMI’s urban repertoire; the Black Eyed Peas, whose song “Boom Boom Pow” earned Urban Song of the Year; and EMI Music Publishing - claiming the Urban Publisher of the Year honor. The BMI President’s Award, which honors an individual who has “distinctly and profoundly influenced the entertainment industry”, was presented to Black Eyed Peas co-founder, in recognition of his work as an artist, producer, and humanitarian.
