As Toronto has been buzzing with performances by 780 bands throughout the city for North By Northeast (NXNE), on the quieter west coast, for the first time in the Polaris Music Award's seven-year history, the 2012 Long List was announced live in Vancouver, BC.

Polaris Music Prize Long List Nominees to be Announced in Vancouver

Broadcast on SiriusXM Canada and CBC Radio3 from the Waldorf Hotel, the Long List -- sponsored this year by the Musicians' Rights Organization Canada (MROC) -- was revealed by past Polaris nominees Veda Hille, Dan Mangan and Hannah Georgas and jury member Francois Marchand ( Vancouver Sun).

"The year's list deliciously illustrates the burgeoning sense of community in our jury," says Polaris founder and executive director Steve Jordan in a statement. "Almost half of the selections on this list were the direct result of passionate recommendations made by individual members to their peers. We hope the ultimate result of this dialogue will likewise inform the taste of adventurous music lovers from Canada and the world."

The Polaris Music Prize awards $30,000 to the artist who creates the Canadian Album of the Year. It is judged solely on artistic merit, without consideration of genre or record sales. The list is determined by a nationwide jury comprised of more than 200 members of the Canadian music media, including journalists, bloggers, and broadcasters. All submitted their top 5 full-length albums released from June 1, 2011 to May 31, 2012

They now vote to decide on the Short List of 10 records to be announced July 17th in Toronto. The winner will be revealed September 24th at the Polaris gala. That night an 11-person grand jury, chosen from the larger jury pool, will be sequestered while each short-list nominee is feted and often performs, debating and eventually casting their vote for the winner.

Past recipients of the Prize are Arcade Fire, Karkwa, Fucked Up, Patrick Watson, Caribou and Final Fantasy.
