Nielsen BDS Deal With Univision Radio Makes It Leading Monitoring service for Latin Stations

Univision Radio, the number one U.S. Spanish-language radio network, will begin using Nielsen BDSradio, making it the leading music monitoring service for Hispanic radio stations in the country. Envision Radio Networks, which represented both Univision Radio and Nielsen BDSradio, facilitated the agreement.

"It made sense to bring the two companies together," said Envision President and CEO Danno Wolkoff on Monday, after the agreement was revealed exclusively to Billboard. Envision, the largest independently-owned radio affiliate relations company in the U.S., provides content and services to more than 1,200 radio stations. The company syndicates Univision Radio's programming, and also represents Nielsen BDSradio Latino in the marketplace. "I guess you could say that in this case we're acting as a double agent," Wolkoff added good-naturedly.

Univision Radio Launches H2O Music Fest

Nielsen's data on airplay, sales, and On-Demand streams is featured weekly in Billboard's charts and is widely cited by numerous publications and broadcasters as the standard for music measurement. Nielsen BDS captures more than 100 million song detections annually on more than 1,900 radio stations, satellite and video channels in 176 markets across North America.

"We are thrilled to be working with Univision Radio and Envision," Howard Appelbaum, President, Entertainment, for Nielsen said in a written announcement by Envision and Nielsen released to Billboard. "When added to our current monitoring relationships, the agreement with Univision and Envision means that Nielsen BDS is now the leading radio monitoring service for Hispanic music stations in the U.S."

Univision Radio reaches 16.5 million listeners per week; and in major markets, it is home to stations that rank Top 5 in any language. The network includes 69 owned and operated stations in 16 markets, including all top 10 Hispanic markets.

"As our bi-lingual audience growth continues it is critical that we look at the overall radio market," said Evan Harrison, executive vice president of Content and Entertainment at Univision Radio. "Listening patterns and tastes are changing at an exponential rate, especially with our younger audiences. Nielsen BDSradio will enable us to keep our finger on the pulse."
