Music and spoken word from the Latin perspective shared the spotlight during VidaLexus Presenta: Poesia & Percusion-capped by the presentation of the Lexus Pursuit of Perfection Award to musician/singer/songwriter Sheila E.

Guests entering the Book Bindery & Brick Building in Culver City, Calif. for the April 12 event were first treated to their choice of tequila kiwi (a hands-down fave as the bar ran out) or cucumber twist cocktails provided by co-sponsor Avion Tequila. Then they were coaxed to take complimentary photos behind the wheel of a silver Lexus IS 250 convertible. As trays of finger food (quesadillas, empanadas, mini-tacos) wound their way around the loft-like space, guests alternately salsa-ed and boogied as they waited for the program to start.

Conversation bounced from Coachella's next-day launch and most anticipated performances ( Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg claimed that nod) to Record Store Day. Among guests milling around the floor: Concord Jazz & Classics Group chief creative officer/label head John Burk, The Village Studios CEO Jeff Greenberg, Omnivore Recordings principal Greg Allen, ASCAP senior director of Rhythm & Soul Jay Sloan and BMI director of national media relations Marlene Meraz.

The program opened with performances by two spoken word artists: Joe Hernandez-Kolski and Mayda DelValle. Up next was the presentation of the Lexus Pursuit of Perfection Award to Sheila E. In addition to her various career achievements, the award recognized Sheila E.'s work on behalf of the organization she founded, The Elevate Hope Foundation, dedicated to assisting the needs of abused and abandoned children through music therapy. Following the presentation, Sheila E. took to the stage with her band for several songs, joined at one point by the E Family.
