Pandora has begun introducing Voice Mode, a new, voice-enabled smart assistant giving mobile listeners a tailored and hands-free path to music discovery. Created in partnership with SoundHound's Houndify AI platform, Voice Mode uses natural-language understanding technology that incorporates a user's personal tastes to enhance requests, which can be prompted by the phrase "Hey Pandora."

Personalized requests using Voice Mode are based on each user's tastes and listening history, and not just what's generally popular. Asking to "play something I like" or "play something for my bike ride" or something as general as "play a different song" will incorporate the deep user knowledge powered by Pandora's Music Genome Project, as well as machine learning search algorithms to provide a personalized listening experience.

Like other voice assistants, such as Amazon's Alexa and Apple's Siri, Voice Mode will also take direction, such as "add to my driving playlist" and answer questions like "what song is this?"

"Pandora is the leader in personalized audio entertainment, and millions of our listeners are already loving the experience we’ve created on smart speakers and other voice-enabled connected devices," said Chris Phillips, Chief Product Officer, Pandora. "With Voice Mode, we are introducing an even more natural and conversational way for listeners to discover new music and enhance their experience directly in the Pandora mobile app, like getting recommendations from a friend who really knows you."

Voice Mode has been rolled out to select listeners on iOS and Android, with wider availability coming soon, the company said.
