Shawn Mendes was in a green room with his team watching the 2019 Grammy nominations on a small TV when he found out that "In My Blood" was up for the prestigious song of the year award and his full album is a best pop vocal album contender.
"I can't even explain it," he tells Billboard of what that moment was like Friday (Dec. 7). "I was more overwhelmed than I was expecting, for sure."
Billboard caught up with Mendes at this year's Z100 iHeartRadio Jingle Ball concert in New York City, the same day Grammy nominations were announced.
"I guess when you take the leap to go and push yourself to be vulnerable in the music, and you're scared that people might not connect with it, I think that's what connects the most," he offers. "Today I really learned that the thing I need to do more in the future is push myself to always go to that vulnerable place and that connection."
"I couldn't choose a song that I would be more proud of getting nominated for a Grammy than 'In My Blood,'" Mendes adds, "so I'm really just over the moon about it."
Grammy excitement aside, pop fans could have something more to look forward to: a musical reunion between Mendes and Camila Cabello (who also happens to be up for a couple Grammys).
"I love her," Mendes says. "One day, I'm sure that we'll write another song together. Millions of songs together."
