"No Roots," Merton's debut single, tops the radio airplay chart.
Merton is the first solo woman to top Adult Alternative Songs since Adele, who ruled for four weeks beginning on the Nov. 21, 2015-dated chart with "Hello."
Merton is also the first female soloist to lead Adult Alternative Songs with her first entry on the tally since Lorde, whose "Royals" ruled for eight weeks beginning Aug. 31, 2013.
Like Lorde and Adele, Merton hails from outside the United States: she was born and currently resides in Germany.
Merton is the eighth act to score a first No. 1 on Adult Alternative Songs in 2017. She dethrones Anderson East, whose "All on My Mind" led on the Dec. 23 ranking. The other first-time leaders this year: Mondo Cozmo, Rag'n'Bone Man, Portugal. The Man, Arcade Fire, Dan Auerbach (solo; he had reached No. 1 with The Black Keys) and The National. Eight new acts at No. 1 gives 2017 the largest amount of leaders for newbies since 2014, when eight also reigned.
Concurrently, "No Roots" reaches a new peak on the all-rock-format Rock Airplay chart, lifting 9-7 with 7.1 million audience impressions (up 8 percent), according to Nielsen Music. On the Alternative Songs airplay chart, it climbs 8-6. It also continues its pop crossover, rising 28-24 on Adult Pop Songs.
It's not just a radio hit, either. "No Roots" breaks into the top 10 of Hot Rock Songs, which blends digital streaming, digital sales and airplay data, pushing 13-9 with 666,000 U.S. streams and 4,000 downloads sold.
