Many were excited about the win by Virginia Democrat Danica Roem, the first openly transgender state lawmaker in America.

Almost a year to the day that Donald Trump was elected president voters in a number of states pushed back against the Republican party by electing Democrats to prominent governorships in New Jersey and Virginia, as well as winning a key mayoral races in New Hampshire, North Carolina and Florida and took the State Senate in Washington while voters rebuked Trumpism by approving a ballot measure to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act in Maine.

But the race that got so many celebrities excited was the win by Virginia Democrat Danica Roem, who became the first openly transgender state lawmaker in America, beating Bob Marshall, who had supported a bill restricting which bathrooms transgender people can use. Roem's victory was lauded by a number of celebs, from Miley Cyrus to Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong and the Bleachers' Jack Antonoff.
