The electronic duo posted a photo Sept. 12 meeting the K-pop superstars during their Asia tour.
The Chainsmokers return to the top 10 of Billboard’s Social 50 chart (reentering at No. 10) after a key interaction in the midst of their Asian tour: a meeting with K-pop boyband -- and Social 50 powerhouse -- BTS.
The Social 50 is powered by data tracked by music analytics company Next Big Sound and ranks the most popular artists on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Wikipedia and Tumblr. The chart's methodology blends weekly additions of friends/fans/followers along with artist page views and engagement. The chart’s latest tracking week ended Sept. 14.
After not appearing on the chart for over three months, The Chainsmokers re-enter at No. 10 with 615,000 Twitter mentions and 394,000 Twitter reactions -- boosts 586 and 2,259 percent, respectively, according to Next Big Sound -- after tweeting about meeting BTS (the chart’s No. 1 act for a 40th week) on Sept. 12.

Love Yourself: Her, BTS’ latest album (out Sept. 18), features a song called “Best of Me” that was co-written and -produced by The Chainsmokers’ Andrew Taggart.
A few spots above the Chainsmokers (and below BTS), Nicki Minaj vaults 19-5 following a busy week that included appearances at New York Fashion Week and the Hand in Hand hurricane relief telethon (Sept. 12), which spurred plenty of photos from each event. Minaj also posted a behind-the-scenes video on Sept. 11 to Instagram documenting her cover shoot for the September issue of Dazed. Minaj earned 29.7 million Instagram reactions in the tracking week, a 268 percent boost.
A pair of artists also make their first appearances on the Social 50 in a while -- starting with Sam Smith, who bows at No. 33 after last appearing on the Jan. 30, 2016-dated ranking (No. 45). Smith’s return lines up with his latest single, “Too Good for Goodbyes,” which debuts at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and at No. 1 on Digital Song Sales. He racked up sizable gains in new followers on his social media accounts to herald his return. On Facebook, he rose 1,319 percent in new followers. He also jumped 456 percent in followers in Instagram, and 96 percent in followers on Twitter. He additionally snagged a 225 percent increase in views to his Wikipedia page.
Also, 5 Seconds of Summer appears on the chart for the first time in six months, returning at No. 44 with boosts in Twitter mentions (93,000 in all) and reactions (81,000) after kicking off the band’s first South American tour with photos from Peru, Chile, Brazil and Argentina. Earlier this year, the four-piece revealed it was working on its third full-length studio album, the follow-up to 2015’s Sounds Good Feels Good, though further information about the full-length has not yet been revealed.
