Memphis now has a new music festival, Mempho, making its debut on October 6-7 at Shelby Farms.
On its second day, Mempho will honor Steve Cropper and Booker T Jones (of legendary instrumental soul outfit Booker T. & The MGs) and their incalculable influence on Stax Records and Memphis music in general, with a special tribute. The ten-piece act Booker T Presents: A Stax Revue & Journey Through Soul, Blues, and R&B will perform the main stage, with an All-Star performance from Steve Cropper & Friends to follow.
In a press release, Cropper explains of the tribute," Being honored anywhere is a great thing but, being honored in Memphis is very special. So many STAX alumni will be there to enjoy it so it will make it even more memorable.”
In addition to Cropper and Jones, performers in the back-to-back revues will include Dave Mason, Eddie Floyd (who wrote “Knock on Wood” with Cropper), John Popper of Blues Traveler, Oteil Burbridge of the Allman Brothers Band.
Additional artists on the festival's lineup include Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit, Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals and Cage The Elephant, Cold War Kids, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Bishop Briggs and many others.
