Filipina singer and actress Lea Salonga -- the first Asian woman to win a Tony Award -- is set to make her return to Broadway in Michael Arden's production of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty's Once on This Island.
Taking the role of Erzulie, the goddess of love, Salonga will also be joined by Merle Dandridge as Papa Ge, Quentin Earl Darrington as Agwe, and Alex Newell as Asaka.
Once on This Island tells the tale of Ti Moune, a fearless peasant girl who falls in love with a wealthy boy from the other side of her island. Inspired by the novel My Love, My Love by Rosa Guy, the musical "transforms the reality of post-storm Haiti into a fantastical world bursting with Caribbean rhythms and dance," according to a statement.
Once on This Island will be staged on Broadway's Circle in the Square Theatre on Nov. 9, with opening night set for Dec. 3.
