The "One Love Manchester" benefit concert, organized by Ariana Grande and her team and featuring performances from Grande, Justin Bieber, Coldplay and several other A-list stars, kicked off today and is being broadcast in dozens of countries around the world. Kicking off with performances from Marcus Mumford, Take That, Robbie Williams, Pharrell, Miley Cyrus and Niall Horan, about an hour into the concert, Grande's manager Scooter Braun emerged to deliver a speech before introducing Grande.
He opened by thanking Grande -- "Myself and all of us around the world are so grateful to you for stepping up and taking action" -- and also extended thanks to the city of Manchester, the Greater Manchester police and first responders, as well as the performers and Live Nation, which promoted the show. He then referenced the terror attack in London last night (June 3), the second attack in the last few weeks following the May 22 bombing outside Grande's concert at the Manchester Arena.
"Last night, this nation was challenged, and you had a decision to make whether to come out here tonight," Braun said to the crowd, estimated at around 50,000. "And this is so beautiful. You looked fear in the face and said, 'No. This is Manchester...' Manchester, your bravery is our hope."
He then shared a message from a 15-year-old named Adam, who Braun had met when visiting victims of the attack in the hospital alongside Grande a few days prior. Adam, who had lost his best friend Olivia in the bombing, asked Braun to share a message to those at the benefit concert. "He said Scooter, make sure you tell them, 'Don't go forward in anger. Love spreads,'" Braun recounted to applause. "Adam, if you're watching, you're our hero tonight."
Before introducing Grande's performance, Braun continued: "Evil will test us. It will show its face again. But because of you, as a worldwide community, we will be fearless, will will be great and we will honor our children. We owe it to them to be brave... Hatred will never win, fear will never divide us, because on this day we all stood with Manchester."
