As previously reported, Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's "Despacito," featuring Justin Bieber, crowns the Billboard Hot 100 chart (dated May 27), rising 3-1. Among highlights for the new leader, it's the first mostly Spanish-language Hot 100 No. 1 in more than 20 years and it makes Bieber the first artist ever to notch new No. 1s in consecutive weeks; a week ago, Bieber bowed at No. 1 as featured (with three other acts) on DJ Khaled's "I'm the One," which this week dips to No. 3.
Who else (a.k.a., beyond Bieber) makes notable Hot 100 chart moves this week?
Julia Michaels, "Issues"
After scoring three Radio Songs top 10s as a writer (for Selena Gomez and Bieber), Michaels earns her first as a performer, as "Issues" (which, like the other three, she co-wrote) jumps 11-8 on the airplay tally, drawing 65 million in audience (up 6 percent) in the week ending May 14, according to Nielsen Music. "Issues" holds at No. 14 on the Hot 100 after reaching No. 12.
Childish Gambino, "Redbone"
The song becomes the first top 40 Hot 100 hit for Donald Glover's musical alter ego, jumping 44-36 in its 23rd week on the chart. It also becomes his first No. 1 on Adult R&B Songs.
Ed Sheeran, "Castle on the Hill"
Sheeran made history on the Jan. 28-dated Hot 100 when "Shape of You" launched at No. 1 and "Castle on the Hill" bowed at No. 6 (its peak to date), making him the first artist ever to debut two titles in the chart's top 10 simultaneously. "Shape" was the lead radio single from ÷ and spent 12 weeks atop the Hot 100; it rebounds 5-4 this week, in its 18th week on the list.
"Castle," now being promoted as the official second radio single from ÷, ranks in the Hot 100's top 40 for the first time in 10 weeks (47-38). It lifts 19-18 on Radio Songs (52 million impressions, up 9 percent), powered by its climbs on the Adult Pop Songs (9-6), Pop Songs (15-13) and Adult Contemporary (25-23) airplay charts.
Miley Cyrus, "Malibu"
Cyrus makes her first Hot 100 appearance since 2014 as "Malibu" debuts at No. 64. The adult-leaning love song starts with 4 million U.S. streams and 29,000 downloads sold after less than a day of tracking, following its May 11 release. It also bows at No. 37 on the Pop Songs airplay chart.
The organic-leaning "Malibu" "cuts through all the dance-pop," says WXKS (Kiss 108) Boston program director Dylan Sprague. "Audience reaction has been awesome."
"Malibu" is Cyrus' 44th Hot 100 entry (including billings as her former Disney persona Hannah Montana), a total that only 10 women have bested, led by Nicki Minaj with 77.
Midland, "Drinkin' Problem"
The Texas trio makes its Hot 100 debut at No. 97 with the single, which rises 18-17 on Country Airplay (19 million in audience, up 17 percent) and bullets at its No. 19 high on Hot Country Songs.
While the act is new on the Hot 100, bassist Cameron Duddy has an impressive hit pedigree: he and Bruno Mars directed the video for the latter's "Locked Out of Heaven," a six-week No. 1 in 2012-13.
