Adele ascends to No. 1 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary radio airplay chart (dated Dec. 3) with "Send My Love (To Your New Lover)," which rises 2-1 (in its 28th week on the tally). The superstar adds her fifth No. 1 on the chart with the song, the second AC leader from her album 25.
"Send My Love" follows Adele's four prior Adult Contemporary No. 1s: "Rolling in the Deep" (19 weeks), "Someone Like You" (five) and "Set Fire to the Rain" (11), all from her album 21 in 2011-12, and lead 25 smash "Hello" (21 weeks beginning on the Nov. 28, 2015, chart). In between "Hello" and "Send," second 25 single "When We Were Young" reached No. 6 in April.
And, adding up the weeks at No. 1 for Adele's five AC leaders, she has now spent 57 total weeks on top, the second-best sum in the chart's history. Here is a look at the acts to log the most weeks at No. 1 on AC, which launched on July 17, 1961:
Most Weeks at No. 1 on AC Chart
87, Celine Dion
49, Elton John
47, Lionel Richie
43, Phil Collins
43, Faith Hill
The coronation of "Send My Love" on AC follows the track's reigns on Adult Pop Songs and Pop Songs. Adele also topped all three pop-formatted airplay charts with "Hello." The last album before 25 to yield at least two songs that each ruled all three charts? Swift's 1989, whose first three singles, "Shake It Off," "Blank Space" and "Style," all led Pop Songs, Adult Pop Songs and AC.
25's to-date U.S. sales stand at 9.1 million, according to Nielsen Music. The set has earned 10.1 million equivalent units and has now spent a year on the Billboard 200, with all 52 of its chart weeks so far in the top 40 (and 36 of those 52 weeks in the top 10, including 10 at No. 1).
Meanwhile, as "Send My Love" tops AC, its follow-up, fourth 25 single "Water Under the Bridge," enters the chart at No. 25. It jumps 30-25 as the Greatest Gainer on Adult Pop Songs (up 102 percent in plays) and bows at No. 32 on Pop Songs.
