Instagram is pressing the button on a major revamp of its popular social media app. And it’s leaning on some serious star-power to help get the message out.
The Facebook-owned photo sharing app today is unveiling "Instagram Stories," a new feature which allows users to capture and share video clips throughout the day. There’s no chance of posting overkill; all pix and clips self-destruct after 24 hours and won't appear on your profile grid or feed. If that sounds familiar, it should -- while Snapchat launched as an automatically self-destructing media messenger, its Stories tab has taken primacy over that foundational naughty-or-otherwise messaging feature.
At launch, Instagram's Stories lack the clever and cute features of Snapchat, like video filters that turn you and friends into a panda -- but Snapchat has about half the daily active users of Instagram, according to a June Bloomberg report on Snapchat's DAUs and Instagram's own stats. Meaning that, even if Instagram's new feature is a shameless copy of Snapchat's core service, it has 150 million more people it can expect to use it.
Musicians are big players in the Instagram ecosystem, which has topped more than half a billion users, the company announced June 20. Six out of Instagram's top 10 most-followed accounts are music accounts, with Ariana Grande, Beyonce, Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift among the most-followed.
