His new leader (and first entry) on the Nielsen Music-measured chart is from his debut full-length, Handwritten, which debuted atop the Billboard 200 in May and has sold 250,000 copies to date in the U.S. "Stitches" has sold 1.3 million downloads.
Mendes first arrived with 2014's The Shawn Mendes EP, which debuted and peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 and has sold 102,000.
Mendes' honor roll of achievements, thus, grows upon crowning Pop Songs. Since first building his audience by posting videos on Vine, the 17-year-old has also opened multiple dates on Taylor Swift's 1989 World Tour.
"The reaction to 'Stitches' has been phenomenal," says David Massey, Island Records president/CEO. (Released on Island, the song is being promoted to radio by Republic.) "Shawn is part of [a group of] influential young artists who are breaking and rewriting the rules of the game."
"To be able to add a No. 1 radio hit to the list of accomplishments for him at such a young age is astonishing," adds Mendes' manager, Andrew Gertler.
Up next, Mendes will join iHeartRadio's Jingle Ball Tour 2015 for 10 dates (Dec. 1-19). On March 5, 2016, he'll headline at Radio City Music Hall in New York.
