Adele is the top musical act in the U.S., vaulting from No. 49 to No. 1 on the Billboard Artist 100 chart (dated Nov. 14). The coronation is sparked by the record-breaking bow of her new single, "Hello," which, as previously reported, launches at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The Artist 100 measures artist activity across Billboard's most influential charts, including the Hot 100 songs chart, Top Album Sales and the Social 50. The Artist 100 blends data measuring album and track sales, radio airplay, streaming and social media fan interaction to provide a weekly multi-dimensional ranking of artist popularity.
Adele crowns the Artist 100 for the first time with her 49-1 jump. (No. 49 was her prior highpoint since the chart launched in July 2014.) The singer/songwriter sports a 1,536 percent increase in overall activity, with digital song sales marking her greatest points contributor (65 percent), as "Hello" opens with a record-shattering 1.11 million downloads sold, according to Nielsen Music. Streaming is Adele's next-biggest metric (23 percent), as the piano ballad starts with 61.6 million U.S. streams and a record-breaking 20.4 million on-demand streams.
With Adele's third studio album, 25, due Nov. 20, she'll likely say hello to more weeks atop the Artist 100 ahead.
Adele leads a busy top five on the Artist 100, as 5 Seconds of Summer re-enter at No. 2, powered by the start of their new album Sounds Good Feels Good, which debuts atop the Billboard 200, with 192,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Oct. 29, and Top Album Sales (179,000 in pure album sales). (The band led the Artist 100 for a week in August 2014.) Carrie Underwood reaches a new Artist 100 peak, soaring 26-3 (passing her prior No. 9 best rank) as Storyteller debuts at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 (177,000) and Top Album Sales (164,000). Rounding out the Artist 100 top five, Justin Bieber bounds 10-4, as his new single "Sorry" blasts onto the Hot 100 at No. 2 with 277,000 downloads sold, and Drake drops 1-5 after six nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1.
At No. 16 on the Artist 100, Ariana Grande re-enters. (She spent two weeks at No. 1 in summer 2014.) Social activity and early airplay for her new single, "Focus," drive her return; expect big gains in sales and streaming next week following the song's retail launch and the premiere of its official video Oct. 29-30.
Also notably, Nicki Minaj jumps 83-36 on the Artist 100, fueled by a 20 percent gain in social activity. Behind the move: a surge in Instagram reactions related to Halloween. In particular, an image circulated widely on social media after Oct. 31 showing a person dressed in costume as Bill Cosby holding an inflatable (female) doll and spiking a drink. While many found humor in the photo, Minaj focused on the serious side, as Cosby is facing allegations that he raped multiple women over several decades. "Our generation is so desensitized," she wrote on Instagram. The post has drawn nearly 300,000 likes and 10,000 comments.
More lightheartedly, Minaj also benefits from Instagram posts featuring side-by-side comparisons of people dressed as her and Beyonce for Halloween, mimicking the pair's "Feeling Myself" video.
