With four prizes, Courtney Barnett cleaned up at Australia’s Independent Music Awards overnight in Melbourne.

The singer-songwriter won every category she was nominated in by taking out best independent artist, scoring best album for her internationally-acclaimed debut Sometimes I Sit And Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit” and taking best independent single or EP honors for “Depreston”.

Barnett, who didn’t attend the ceremony due to touring commitments, also collected the best independent label accolade for Milk!, which she founded with fellow artist Jen Cloher.

Few independent music aficionados would have expected anything less than a dominant night from Barnett. The rising star scooped a pair of prizes at last year’s edition, including the best independent artist trophy, the event’s highest honor, and she leads all artists with eight nominations for next month's ARIA Awards

Other winners Thursday night (Oct. 22) included #1 Dads (breakthrough independent artist of the year), Seth Sentry (best independent hip-hop album), Frank Yamma (best independent country album), C.W. Stoneking (best independent blues and roots album), King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard (best independent hard rock, heavy or punk album), and Flight Facilities (best independent dance/electronica album).

The independent music community's gathering wasn’t just a celebration for Barnett and her fellow winners. The AIR trade body, which organizes the ceremony, is currently celebrating its 20th year. And its so-called AIR Awards is now 10 years old.
