Sam Smith’s “Writing’s on the Wall” has hit No. 1 on the U.K.’s Official Top 100 Singles Chart, surprisingly making it the first James Bond theme to ever top the tally.

“It was such an honor to be asked to write and record 'Writing’s on the Wall,' and it’s incredible that it’s become the first Number 1 Bond theme song,” Smith told Official Charts. “It’s been an unforgettable experience working with Barbara [Broccoli] and Sam [Mendes] to become part of this British legacy. I couldn’t have done this without my fans -- this is a special moment I’ll never forget.”

Broccoli is co-producing and Mendes is directing the upcoming Bond film Spectre, which drops Nov. 6 in the U.S.

Before Smith, the two highest-charting Bond themes on the Official Top 100 Singles Chart were a pair that peaked at No. 2: Adele’s "Skyfall" and Duran Duran’s “A View to Kill.”

Smith also makes an appearance on top of the U.K. albums chart, as Disclosure's cameo-heavy Caracal -- featuring Smith, Lorde, The Weeknd and more -- debuts at No. 1. Meanwhile, New Order makes its highest chart appearance in 22 years, debuting at No. 2 with Music Complete.
