Shane Redway has died after being involved in a car crash in Toronto. The rapper’s representatives at Champ Management have confirmed his death to local media outlets, and friends in the music industry -- including Drake -- have paid tribute to the late rapper on social media.
“Redway was known for being a passionate artist who was always striving for greatness, pushing the boundaries of always believing in your visions and dreams which led to the creation of the BLVD (The Belief Leading Visions & Dreams),” the management company said in a statement released to the Toronto Star.
Redway was one of three people reportedly killed in the accident, which occurred on Saturday, Aug. 1, just after 4 a.m. local time on a highway near Pearson International Airport. The vehicle lost control, hit a guardrail and then burst into flames.
Toronto TV station CP24 reports that police have not yet determined the cause of the crash.
“At this point we are looking at every option. We don’t have any indication from direct witnesses so we are appealing to any witnesses that may have seen the vehicle prior to the collision to come forward and speak with police, and we are following up with the original owner of the vehicle and family members,” Const. Kerry Schmidt told the station. “We don’t know if alcohol, fatigue, distraction or any other factors played a part in this. It is still very dynamic.”
“Gone way too soon,” Drake wrote of Redway on Instagram. “Just saw this guy yesterday at Bounce. RIP Redway.”
“Should have told you yesterday I was proud of what we had both done for our city over these years and I didn't cause there were too many chairs and too many people in the way. A lesson to anybody second guessing. Rest easy king,” he added.
Producer Wondagurl also posted about Redway’s death: “Lost my brother today. Life is crazy. #RIPREDWAY”
