Ciara returns to the Social 50 chart (dated May 16) after a month’s absence, as the pop diva dances in at No. 39. She comes back thanks to buzz generated by the promotion of her latest album, Jackie (heading for a debut on next week’s Billboard 200 chart).
The Social 50 ranks the most popular artists on YouTube, Vevo, Facebook, Twitter, SoundCloud, Wikipedia, MySpace and Instagram. The chart's methodology blends weekly additions of friends/fans/followers along with artist page views, song plays and reactions as measured by music analytics company Next Big Sound.
Ciara's promo last week included the announcement of a May 5 performance on NBC’s Today (dubbed Cici de Mayo, referencing Cinco de Mayo). On April 28, she teased the album by releasing the audio to the set's “Dance Like We’re Making Love,” helping to increase her mentions on Twitter for the week by 48 percent and create a 23 percent bump in traffic to her Wikipedia page in the week ending May 3, according to Next Big Sound.
Elsewhere on the list, Becky G experiences a substantial rise, moving 35-18 in her 28th cumulative week on the chart due to social buzz generated by appearances on two awards shows and a tour announcement. She performed on the Radio Disney Music Awards (April 26), presented at the Billboard Latin Music Awards (30), and then announced a tour with J Balvin the next day. The trio of events led to a 70 percent increase in overall Social 50 chart activity for the week.
Lastly, Calvin Harris re-enters at No. 43 due to his ongoing association with Taylor Swift. During the charting week, Harris posted a few pictures on Instagram that appeared to be taken inside Swift’s apartment, including one of her cat, named Olivia Benson. The picture helped drive a 319 percent rise in weekly reactions to his Instagram account.
